Characters in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (Part 1; A to I):
A
Aragorn
Son of Arathorn, also known as Strider in the Wild. A descendent of Isildur and the rightful king of Gondor and Arnor. A member of The Fellowship of the Ring. He was raised in Rivendell under the name of Estel, meaning hope to hide his true identity. He is one of the last Dunedains, basically humans who live longer than most.

Arwen
Daughter of Elrond and Celebrain. An elf, but chooses mortal life and marries Aragorn to become the queen of Gondor and Arnor.
B
Balin
One of the dwarves in Thorin Oakenshield's company in the attempt to take back the Lonely Mountains. Slain during an attempt to retake Moria.
Bard
A man of Esgaroth(Laketown) who slew the dragon Smaug with the black arrow. He led the survivers of Esgaroth to Dale and up the Lonely Mountains to ask Thorin for the gold he gave his word for.
Beorn
A skin-changer who resides in the region of Mirkwood and takes the form of a huge bear.
Bilbo Baggins
A hobbit adventurer who takes the ring from Gollum during his adventures with the dwarves to reclaim Erabor. He lives a long life due to the ring and celebrates his 111th birthday in the Shire. He is the owner of Baggend, The Shire and passes it down to his adopted cousin, Frodo Baggins. Later, he leaves Middle-Earth to the Undying Lands.
Boromir
A member of The Fellowship of the Ring. Son of Denethor, Steward of Gondor and brother to Faramir. Slain by Uruk-hai at Amon Hen trying to protect the Hobbits.
C
Celeborn
Lord of Lothlorien and husband of Galadriel, the Lady of Light. He went to the Undying Lands at the end of the 4th age.
D
Denethor
Steward of Gondor, father to Boromir and Faramir. Commits suicide during The Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
E
Elendil
A Numenorean whose sons founded the kingdom of Gondor and Arnor. Slain at the battle with Sauron in the Last Aliance between men and elves. His name is also used as Aragorn's battle cry.
Elrond
Ruler of Rivendell and father of Arwen, Elladan, and Elrohir. Has a brother called Elros. His parents was a man and an elf, so he was able to choose which to be. He choose elvish life and his brother did the opposite.
Eomer
Brother to Eowyn, cousin and heir to the King of Rohan, Theoden.
Eowyn
Sister to Eomer, a member of the royal house of Rohan. Slayed the Witch king of Angmar and married Faramir after Sauron's defeat,
F
Faramir
Son of Denethor, Brother to Boromir, and husband to Eowyn after Sauron's defeat and the war.
Fili
A dwarf, nephew of Thorin. Was one of the dwarves on the adventure to reclaim Erabor alongside with his younger brother, Kili. Died trying to protect Thorin.
Frodo Baggins
Bilbo Baggin's cousin who went on the adventure of destroy the one ring of power. Was one of the four hobbits in The Fellowship of the Ring.
G
Galadriel
Ruler of Lothlorien alongside her husband Celeborn. Older than the Moon.
Gandalf
A wizard. Part of The Fellowship of the Ring, killed in the battle with the Balrog in Moria but reborn to finish his role of defeating Sauron.
Gil-galad
Formed the Last Alliance of Elves and Men alongside Elendil and fell against Sauron's forces.
Glorfindel
An Elf Lord.
Gloin
Father of Gimli and one of the dwarves in Thorin Oakenshield's company.
Gimli
Son of Gloin and the dwarf member of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Goldberry
Tom Bombadil's wife, the river woman's daughter.
Gollum
A creature that was once a hobbit-kind but after being the possessor of the ring, changed into a nasty looking creature known around Middle-Earth. Has on obssesion with the One Ring and ends up falling into the Crack of Doom with the ring.
Grima Wormtongue
An ally of Saruman who gave false advice to the King of Rohan, Theoden. Killed Saurman in the end.
I
Isildur
Son of Elendil and co-founder to the kingdom of Gondor. Managed to take the One Ring from Sauron at the end of the 2nd Age but was soon after slain at the Disaster of Gladden Fields.
